Managing Moisture in High Humidity Environments with INTELLO®

INTELLO®’s ability to adapt its permeability ensures optimal moisture control, even in demanding high-humidity environments. Managing moisture effectively in these spaces is crucial for maintaining structural integrity, indoor air quality, and overall energy efficiency. Pro Clima’s INTELLO® vapour control membrane is an innovative solution designed to tackle these challenges by precisely controlling moisture and air infiltration within the building envelope. Furthermore, INTELLO® is BRANZ Appraised and assists in compliance with NZBC Clauses B2, E3, F2, and H1.

Traditional vapour barriers often lack the adaptive qualities needed to handle fluctuating humidity levels. Without the ability to "breathe" — allowing moisture to escape — static barriers can trap moisture inside the wall assembly, potentially leading to more structural damage than if no barrier were used at all.

The Hidden Risks of Steam and Humidity in Bathrooms

Bathrooms are among the most moisture-laden spaces in a building, with frequent exposure to water and steam. Without precise management, poor moisture control leads to condensation inside the thermal envelope, fueling mould growth and damaging critical building materials. This doesn't just threaten the structural integrity of the building; it poses real health risks to the occupants.

The "Intelligence" Behind the Membrane

INTELLO® isn't just a barrier; it’s a smart system that responds to changing environmental conditions. It features humidity-variable diffusion resistance, which means its permeability adjusts based on the humidity of the surrounding environment.

  • During cooler, less humid winter months: INTELLO® acts as a vapour barrier, preventing moisture from penetrating the building envelope from the interior.

  • In hot, humid summer months: When moisture is driven through the envelope from the outside, the membrane becomes more vapour-permeable. This allows trapped moisture to escape and be removed through ventilation.

This dynamic functionality reduces the risk of condensation and ensures that building materials remain dry and functional over time.

Key Benefits of INTELLO ® in Bathrooms

  • Dynamic Moisture Management: INTELLO® ’s ability to adapt its permeability ensures optimal control, even in high-humidity bathroom environments.

  • Improved Durability: The membrane protects underlying structural components, such as timber and insulation, from prolonged exposure to moisture.

  • Enhanced Indoor Air Quality: By preventing mould and mildew growth, INTELLO® contributes to a cleaner, healthier environment, which is particularly vital in bathrooms where moisture issues are prevalent.

  • Energy Efficiency: Effective airtightness and moisture control improve thermal performance. By reducing unwanted air infiltration, INTELLO® improves the effectiveness of bathroom ventilation, heating, and cooling.

Delivering Performance with Confidence

For high-performance results, INTELLO® is installed alongside other pro clima products, such as TESCON® VANA tape, ORCON® sealant, and ROFLEX penetration seals, to create an airtight, moisture-controlled protective layer.

By incorporating INTELLO® into bathroom construction or renovation projects alongside quality insulation and mechanical ventilation, builders and designers can ensure long-lasting performance, sustainability, and occupant comfort. This system approach allows professionals to address moisture management challenges with confidence and ease.

Blower Door

A Blower Door is a machine used to measure building airtightness. It can also measure airflow between building zones, test ductwork airtightness, and physically locate air leakage sites in the building envelope.

Intelligent Airtightness

Moisture damage to structures and protection measures

  • Moisture can enter into building structures in many different ways, and it is impossible to prevent a certain level of moisture loading.

  • However, if moisture levels are too high, moisture damage to structures can result.

  • To ensure a structure is protected against moisture damage, the drying reserves possessed by the building component are much more important than the degree of tightness of the vapour check.

  • Vapour barriers with high diffusion resistances allow for barely any drying from the component to the inside.

A high degree of protection against moisture damage to building structures can be achieved with intelligent airtightness.
